chall-onge!

Since I wasn't able to tackle the newest list of twenty-six, I decided to take Shell up on her mini challenge. A color challenge. Ten photos, ten colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, white), in around ten days. This was the perfect time of year for it. Thanks for getting me out of the house and back behind my camera, Shell.

Did you go on a blog hiatus without telling me? Oh, won't you PLEASE
update? Pretty please. Pretty please with Colin Firth and Johnny Depp
on top?

Oh man. How do you say no to that? You don't. Instead you update and apologize and promise to do better. And, as a pledge of good faith, you go and do something crazy like signing on for things like this (even if not officially).

No. 32

Thirty-two is the atomic number of the chemical element Germanium and is the fifth power of the number two. It is also the freezing poing of water in degrees Fahrenheit. It is the number of completed, numbered piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, the number of footsteps (counted them myself) leading to the room where the paint doesn't want to dry. It is the number in a full set of teeth in an adult human and the code for international direct dial phone calls to Belgium. It is roughly the number of times that I caught myself thinking David Sedaris looked a bit like Justin Timberlake (under those lights. from our perch in the mezzanine. if you squint juust right) last night. And it's the number of candles that Justin will have to blow out this year after making his birthday wish.

Happy birthday to my favorite 32-year-old! I love love love la la love you, Justin!

Every morning should start like this

Maya: Knock knock (said while patting my leg, because, really, what's a knock-knock joke without the knocking?)

Me: Who's there?

Maya: Tank

Me: Tank who?

Maya: TANK!

And then Maya laughed hysterically and left the room.

Girl in the box

Older

Please know that although I am a day late, nearly two, I absolutely did NOT forget that one of my good friends had a birthday, because forgetting birthdays is not what I do. No, marking dates on the calendar and consulting with Justin in the hopes of coming up with something that is not on their wish list, failing, and then ordering from the list anyway, but in such a way as to guarantee that the gift arrives after the birthday, THAT is what I do.

So, happy birthday, Chris, from your tardy friends.

Obvious

Maya woke up a little earlier than usual this morning, which gave me a smidge of time to spend with her doing mama/little girl things before I had to leave for work. Things like being all kissy and silly, asking if she had good dreams, locating Dora, then Boots, rescuing her from Lake Maya and getting her out of the jammies that Lake Maya leaked on during the night.

So, her diaper is dry and new and she's sitting upright once more on the changing table when Maya pats me and says, "I’m cold, mama." Followed by another "cold", in case I'd missed it the first time.

"OK. Let’s find you some clothes." I pick up little girl and walk over to open her closet door.

"Soo," I say, scanning Maya's outfits, "what do you want to wear?"

"Clothes," she says.

Cue Jimmy Stewart

"Hey, Maya, do you see the moooon?"

She searches the sky.

"See it? It's bright!"

"There it is!" she says, jabbing a finger at the sky, and then immediately turns to my mom and says, "Get it, grandma! Get it!"
